OUR PHILOSOPHY

English proficiency is essential to compete in today’s global marketplace. Many schools take advantage of this need by charging exorbitant fees for mediocre instruction. At NYLC, we believe that quality language education should be accessible to all at an affordable cost. To meet this goal, we continually educate ourselves in the latest and most effective teaching methods, while working hard to keep student costs as low as possible.

Welcome International Students

New York Language Center strives for excellence in all aspects of our program. This will help make your time with us well spent. Not only will you make friends from all over the world, you will receive excellent instruction, participate in exciting activities and enjoy our wonderful city! Our courses are designed with you in mind. Although NY Language Center has designated start dates, it is possible to begin on any Monday. (or Tuesday when there is a bank holiday). International students on a student visa may study in Midtown Manhattan, Queens, and the Upper West Side.

Our Communicative Approach

New York Language Center prides itself in using the communicative approach to learning. Some students are only in the program for several weeks if on a tourist visa, and for a longer period of time if on an F-1 visa, others are part of the local immigrant community. All of these student populations are interested in acquiring skills in the language that are represented in a meaningful context and are relevant to their individual life experiences.

The inherent concept of communicative methodology, which is implemented in the New York Language Center classroom, consists of the importance placed on content and the interpretation of it rather than form.

Communicative activities are employed to draw out the student and engage him or her in a conversation that simulates an authentic situation. Communicative activities necessitate a series of conditions in order to ensure a successful outcome: (1) a desire and motivation to communicate; (2) a communicative purpose or intention; (3) a focus on language content rather than form; (4) usage of the language in various contexts and frequency of use; (5) maintenance of a student-centered classroom and less focus on teacher intervention; (6) avoidance of artificial, controlled and contrived scenarios. Students should be exposed to real-life situations in a familiar context and permitted and encouraged to react and respond spontaneously.

Moreover, New York Language Center provides students with textbooks and materials that are abundant with communicative activities and pair work exercises. Students are able to expand on their background knowledge and acquire lexical resources and syntactic comprehension in an environment that is conducive to learning, while absorbing American culture.
